Community meals are provided every Monday through Friday from 10-11AM and 5-6PM.
Serve LA provides over 1,000 meals a week to the community rain or shine, no matter the holiday our regular weekday. Thanks to our grocery store partners we have been able to provide these meals to the community for over 25 years. Our volunteer teams include prep chefs, food sorters, donation van drivers, dining room hosts, back-of-house plating, and after-meal cleaning to help reset the Hope Center for the next day’s services. Every day our goal remains the same: we want to be more than a meal. And we strive to do this for our community by serving hope for change with each plate.
Showers are available twice a week, Tuesday and Thursday from 9-11:30AM.
Serve LA provides access to about 200 showers a month with the help of staff and volunteer shower attendants. Shoes, clothing, water bottles, and hygiene items are also distributed upon request and as supplies allow.
Serve LA uses approximately 20% of the total food we receive—the remaining 80% is then shared with partners to be distributed freely in their own neighborhoods as part of their own city renewal efforts.
Out of the 110,000 boxes of food we receive in donations, Serve LA distributes about 90,000 boxes of food to surrounding communities in need through our Citywide Distribution Program. Each day throughout the week, we receive grocery donations approaching the end of their viability, which means that if Serve LA can’t use them we must find a home for them as soon as possible. We have a variety of partner organizations ranging from neighboring churches, to fire departments, to other religious entities, or other pop-up nonprofits— each come to the Hope Center throughout the week to receive resources to enable their own service to our city.
Community renewal is simply the collective impact of individual renewal stories—every story of hope is different and every one matters.
I hadn’t been in touch with my family for years. I was on the streets, living homeless. I was sick. I was on drugs and alcohol. And knew I was headed toward the grave. I was introduced to the director of Serve LA and I entered the recovery ministry. They helped me get clean off the drugs and alcohol. It wasn’t easy. But my life transitioned from hopelessness and not having self-value or self-worth to restoration and healing and hope again. The things that the Lord has restored in my life—relationships with my family, the value of life that I have today—you can’t buy that with money. Today what gives me hope is being able to pour into other people what has been done for me. Through serving a plate of food, recognizing someone by name, having a chat with people out on the streets—I now get to see people’s lives changed in my community.
Who needs hope and who gives hope to whom are inextricably woven together—seeking one another’s flourishing reveals our own mutaul need.
